Kendilerini başkalarının yargıları üzerinden tanıyanlar, başkalarını kendi yargılarının ötesinde tanıyamazlar.

Knowing about oneself and knowing oneself are two different things. Knowing about oneself is mere information. Often this information is a result of being told who we are. It’s a second-hand description of us.
As children we must rely on our parents and siblings to know who we are. A child can’t investigate herself at such an early age. So we must listen. “You’re stupid”, “You’re slow”, “You’re special and meant for great things”, are some of the labels given to us.
Whether positive or negative, these judgments make us insecure as adults. Why? They get us used to being told who we are. When we are in our teens, we compare ourselves with others to find out who we are, for no one is directly telling us anymore. They’re only speaking behind our backs.
Soon, we take on an identity and stop questioning our base reality. Knowing ourselves this way, we have no other way to know others but judge them based on our projections and comparisons.
To look beyond a judgment at someone becomes unnecessary for it has been working out for us! This is the reason why we rarely discover anything new about another person or ourselves.
We have stopped looking deeper. Self knowledge is first-hand understanding of who we are. It means we have to rediscover ourselves. From scratch.
This requires questioning everything we believe to be true about ourselves. This requires discarding all forms of self-protective or self-limiting beliefs we have and examining ourselves as we are.
It means asking difficult questions and refusing easy answers. To see how we act either from a dominant fear or a desire for pleasure. To see how there is pettiness underneath our grandiosity. To see how jealous we can be, even of our friends. To see how deeply insecure we are, all the time.
To discover these things about ourselves, is to go beyond them. Change happens on its own when we find out how unconsciously we have acted so far.
Self knowledge then is not knowing facts about oneself but knowing the truth.

The Ego has no option but to judge. That is it’s conditioning, it’s structure it’s foundation. It’s the accumulation of the past through which we are seeing the present. When we see this way, we can’t help but compare the present with the past.
⠀⠀
When we compare, a judgment is inevitable. This is the Ego. Awareness has no other quality except to watch this process of judgment. It has no other purpose. No desire to change what is seen. No desire to stop the process of judgment. It’s only a witness.
⠀⠀
To witness the present is to reveal the unconscious process of judging, to make it conscious. When the Ego is exposed this way it gives us an insight into its real motives, it’s true desires. This insight is self-knowledge - to know exactly what one is, without any desire to change it.
⠀⠀
How does change happen when all we are doing is observing? It happens for two reasons. First, because have stopped wasting our energy in fighting what is. We need a lot of energy to bring about psychological change and we have now a large reserve of it to be used.
⠀⠀
Second, because we have simplified the complexity of the problem and found the root of a certain thought pattern or behavior. Now things are very easy to do for its clear what is happening. The action we must take seems obvious.
⠀⠀
For instance, we realize that we aren’t enough because of our desire to please others, or that we are angry not at a person but at ourselves for not being able to deal with them, or that our fear of failure comes from our attachment to an idea of success.
⠀⠀
This is Insight. It’s nature is to liberate us from a persistent pattern. It does so not by rejecting the pattern, but by accepting it as a part of who we are, for the very first time.
